Morocco, Congo and South Sudan are among 17 African nations with elections this year

A series of significant African elections is scheduled to take place in 2026, including a General Election in Morocco, a Presidential Election in the Republic of Congo, and a General Election in South Sudan.

Morocco

Morocco is potentially one of the most important African elections to a lot of people in the UK who go on holiday to the North African nation each year.

The nation’s 395 members of the House of Representatives will face voters in September. The election will see a shake-up in parties as the Popular Movement Party, Liberal Moroccan Party and National Democratic Party continue to make their moves by founding a new political alliance named ‘The Popular Coalition’.

The incumbents, the RNI (National Rally of Independents) led by Aziz Akhannouch, are only leading the Authenticity and Modernity Party by 15 seats. A lack of polling in the country makes election predictions very difficult.

Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo is set to hold a presidential election. The incumbent, Denis Sassou Nguesso, has served as the nation’s president since 1997.

Sassou Nguesso has put himself forward to run for election yet again after he removed the age and terms limits on the nation’s presidency back in 2015. He won the previous election in 2021 with 88.40% of the vote, beating the next most popular candidate by over 1.4 million votes. He is expected to win again.

South Sudan

South Sudan has been a nation long torn apart by conflict, with the nation’s general election postponed time and again due to conflict.

The nation’s longtime president Salva Kiir Mayardit has also not assisted in enabling the general election to take place, which will see voters choosing their ideal president as well as their representatives in the National Legislative Assembly, where  276 seats are required for a majority.

Currently, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement dominates the assembly with 332 of the 550 seats.
