The Bedford-based Structural Battery Company was tonight named “Defence Innovator of the Year” at the 2025 Innovation Awards.

The prestigious accolade was announced after a year-long process of voting and judging at a finale awards dinner attended by 500 people at Eastside Rooms in Birmingham.

John Moffat, CEO and co-founder of The Structural Battery Company, said this win was recognition for entrepreneurs everywhere who make big sacrifices to pursue their dreams.

The Structural Batter y Company delivers structural batteries that power and protect mobility platforms and deployable systems. By combining structural strength with energy storage, its systems reduce weight, extend  range and enable stealth through silent running.

Built for rapid integration and battlefield repair, this UK innovation enhances operational advantage in complex, contested environments, increasing UK and NATO forces’ lethality on the battlefield.

‘Recognitition for all the entrpreneurs out there’

Reacting to new of the win, John said: “I think it’s a great example to set to other entrepreneurs. You know, this lifetime learning or old bloke at university, the persistence, hard work.

“You’ve got to give some stuff up if you want to make a big, if you want to make a big impact, and there’s a lot of people out there who do a lot of hard work, who stay away from the family, who give up, from a financial perspective, a lot of stuff, to see their ideas through.

“And this is a recognition for all that, hard work for all entrepreneurs across the country, across the world.”

Innovation Awards are open to businesses, individuals and organisations across the UK

Dr Richard Fallon, CEO of the Technology Supply Chain (TSC) membership organisation, which runs the annual Innovation Awards, said: “Congratulations to The Strucural Battery Company. We had more entries than ever before this year, and the competition for each category was stronger than it’s ever been.
