Wolverhampton lithium battery recycler named ‘Sustainability Innovator of the Year’

UK’s first industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycler has been named “Sustainability Innovator of the Year” at the 2025 Innovation Awards.

Recylcus Group, based in Wolverhampton, received the prestigious accolade, after a year-long process of voting and judging, at a finale awards dinner attended by 500 people at Eastside Rooms in Birmingham.

‘Validation for the massive teamwork’

Robin Brundle, chairman and co-founder of Recyclus Group, reacting to news of the win, said: “It feels great and a real validation for the massive teamwork that we’ve put in back at base.

“This also supports the credibility of what we’re doing, to push along consumer responsibility in recycling lithium-ion batteries.”

Developed by Recyclus, the UBRS mobile truck advances lithium-ion battery recycling, building on LiBatt plant technology.

It can shred any lithium-ion battery and separate materials into reusable fractions, recycling 500kg to two tonnes an hour while reducing transport risks, preventing fires and recovering critical materials that would otherwise be landfilled.

Scalable and deployable on-site, UBRS supports consumer and environmental responsibility, serving multiple sectors including the MoD, insurance and e-waste, while strengthening UK recycling rates and national battery supply chain resilience.

Innovation Awards are open to individuals, businesses and organisations across the UK

Dr Richard Fallon, CEO of the Technology Supply Chain (TSC) membership organisation, which runs the annual Innovation Awards, said: “Congratulations to DriRun. We had more entries than ever before this year, and the competition for each category was stronger than it’s ever been.

“Each winner can be justifiably proud and can look forward to ongoing support from the 5,000-member TSC network as they chart their course to future success.”

The Innovation Awards recognise, celebrate and reward the businesses, organisations and individuals who are dedicated to innovation.

The awards are open to innovative individuals, businesses and organisations – including universities, local councils and catapults – based in the UK.
