Why West Midlands businesses can’t afford to ignore ESG

Across the West Midlands, a quiet shift is reshaping how companies operate. Sustainability, once an optional extra, is now at the centre of how customers, investors and regulators judge performance.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting is rapidly moving from large corporates into the supply chains that feed them.

With the EU’s new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and tighter UK carbon reporting rules, even smaller businesses are starting to feel the pressure to measure and disclose their environmental and social impact.

Regulation is rising and early movers will gain the edge

For many Midlands firms, particularly those in manufacturing, construction and professional services, that’s a major change. They’re being asked questions that didn’t appear on tender forms five years ago, for example:

What’s your carbon footprint?

How do you treat your staff?

What’s your plan for net zero?

Those who can answer confidently are already finding new opportunities. ESG data can help win contracts, attract investment, and strengthen brand reputation. It also drives internal improvements, cutting waste, improving energy use and motivating staff around a shared purpose.

Many SMEs are not yet with the ESG programme

Yet despite the benefits, many small and medium-sized enterprises still see ESG as complex or irrelevant. In reality, it’s just structured common sense, understanding your impact, making improvements and being transparent about progress.

Many businesses assume sustainability always means costly consultants and endless paperwork. In truth, it’s about practical steps, measuring what matters, reducing waste, and showing progress. The companies that start now will be the ones still thriving in five years’ time.

As global supply chains tighten and government policy evolves, businesses that act early will have the advantage.

The West Midlands has a long tradition of innovation. This is simply the next stage of it. Embracing ESG today isn’t just about compliance – it’s about building stronger, more resilient businesses for the future.
