New Freedom of Information data highlights growing local demand for electric vehicle infra as the 2030 petrol and diesel ban approaches

Solihull Council has received around 90 requests for improved public electric vehicle charging provision since 2024, according to Freedom of Information data obtained by Polestar.

The figures underline the growing demand for accessible EV infrastructure across the region as more motorists make the switch to electric driving, the firm claims.

More than 600 public charging points are currently available across the Birmingham and Solihull area, with a further 1,500 spaces projected to be commissioned by the end of the 2030/31 financial year.

The local picture reflects broader national momentum behind electric vehicle adoption.

Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show pre-owned EV sales increased by 32% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, with motorists drawn by lower running costs amid fluctuating fuel prices.

Affordability driving the switch

Greater availability of second-hand EVs at more accessible price points is also helping to fuel demand, providing a more affordable route into electric ownership ahead of the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

James Underwood, Space Manager at Polestar Birmingham and Solihull, said: “It’s encouraging to see continued investment in public charging provision, particularly as we move closer to the 2030 ban.”

Mr Underwood said the pre-owned market was also accelerating, with Birmingham and Solihull recording a 73% increase in pre-owned EV sales between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

“The combination of expanded charging infrastructure and increased availability of more affordable pre-owned EV options will help accelerate the transition to tailpipe emissions-free motoring,” he said.

Polestar Solihull is located at Crescent Arcade, Touchwood Shopping Centre, Solihull.
